The negotiations between the unions and the NVZ are deadlocked, but Melkert said in Op1 that he would like to get them going again. Staff of dozens of hospitals will stop their normal work for a day from 08:00 on Thursday. The employees are demanding better collective agreements about, among other things, their wages. The staff pretend it’s a Sunday, meaning only urgent care goes through.

When asked how much is needed to compensate healthcare personnel for, among other things, higher energy costs and inflation, Melkert said ‘that we are soon talking about half a billion euros’. Such a sum is really necessary, he emphasized. ‘Yes, you know how many employees there are in the hospitals. And how much care demand there is that is increasing more and more,’ he explained to a presenter of the program.
