Nvidia is creating a second planet Earth to save lives

Nvidia is known for chips, but also for intelligence. It has now created a second version of Earth: a digital twin, which can show what climate change looks like. But also consider, for example, simulating extreme weather that will probably only increase.

Nvidia Earth-2

Extreme weather events cost in broken glass, collapsed houses, deaths, and so on. There is a lot of loss involved and it costs a lot of money. Extreme weather due to climate change appears to cause approximately 120 billion euros in economic losses. It could help to map out how this will develop further. And what do we say, card: Nvidia simply thought it would recreate the entire globe and provided it with so much computing power that it makes calculations a thousand times faster than we are used to.

It’s called Earth-2 and is powered by the Nvidia DGX Cloud that allows users to create interactive simulations with AI. This way you can see how a typhoon could develop. A weather station in Taiwan already uses it: more than 136 typhoons have occurred here since 2000. Using this second earth and especially the computing power behind it can help to warn people and get them to safety in time. After all, it can calculate very quickly: weather forecasts can be updated in seconds, while previously this could take minutes or even hours. Moreover, it is also displayed in high resolution, bringing out more detail.

Saving people

But this is not a tool that is only used for the short term: the intention is to eventually be able to see ten years into the future. Imagine that you can already have it calculated that there is a high chance of a climate disaster in a certain area, then you can already add extra reinforcements there or even let people indicate that they live in an area that may be destroyed in the future. . It is of course not without reason that we have sayings such as ‘March moves its tail’ and ‘April does what it wants’: not everything can always be predicted when it comes to mother nature. But imagine that we can predict certain climate problems, then that could ensure that we can take these types of disasters into account during construction projects, for example, and be able to evacuate people and save lives much better in time.

A second earth, where we unfortunately cannot go to take shelter if things get too bad on our own earth, but where we can help ensure that things hopefully don’t get too bad on our earth.
