There are currently no trains running between Workum and Stavoren. Near the village of Molkwerum, badgers have made dozens of holes underground that can collapse from passing trains. This can cause the track to sag. Rail traffic will be suspended at least until Sunday.
The badgers have had their burrow underground for years, writes Omrop Fryslân. Moving the animals is not easy because the badger is a protected species. Previously, the track had to be repaired and drivers had to drive at an adjusted speed. Plans were then made for a possible artificial badger sett, but this has not yet been realised.
Rail manager ProRail is therefore keeping an eye on the area and has noticed that the animals have been extra active lately. “They are in their breeding season and are therefore often in their burrow. Tomorrow we will talk to various authorities to find a solution,” said a spokesperson.
It is still unclear exactly how long the blockage will last. Stop buses are used on the route in question. ProRail advises travelers to keep an eye on the journey planner.
