No OneLove band: 'Embarrassed' El Yaakoubi chooses alternative

Like Feyenoord player Orkun Kökcü, Excelsior captain Redouan El Yaakoubi wears his own captain’s armband during this weekend’s Eredivisie round. The defender chooses a tire with the text ‘Respect’ instead of ‘One Love’, the Kralingers announced.

The question to play with a OneLove captaincy is ’embarrassing’ El Yaakoubi, says Excelsior. The number sixteen of the Eredivisie emphasizes that both player and club support the message that is being propagated.

‘Redouan is a champion of equality in the world and someone who strives for general social respect. Someone who, through his own social foundation Durf te Dromen, commits himself daily to a fairer society in which everyone gets the chance to excel,’ writes general director Daan Bovenberg in a response to the club site.

El Yaakoubi also decided to refrain from wearing the OneLove band five months ago. Then he already opted for a similar band as now. “I also have my own norms and values. I hope that is also respected,” he told Algemeen Dagblad on Tuesday.

After Kökcü, Yaakoubi is the second Eredivisie captain to give his own interpretation to the OneLove promotion. The playmaker of Feyenoord opts for a band with the text ‘Respect for everyone’ in the top match against Ajax.

During the OneLove campaign, attention is drawn within football for connection and against racism and discrimination. According to the organization, the colors on the band symbolize ‘origin, color, gender, identity and sexual preference’.
