Network approach overweight and obesity in adults

Partnership Overweight Netherlands (PON), together with 7 municipalities, hasBasic model Network approach for overweight and obese adults” developed. The network approach supports municipalities in organizing comprehensive care and support for overweight or obese adults at a local or regional level.

State Secretary Maarten van Ooijen of VWS launched the network approach during the symposium “Network approach Overweight and Obesity Adults”. van Ooijen calls the network approach is an important step in making people aware of the importance of a healthy life. In order to properly help people with overweight and obesity, cooperation between different professionals from the social and medical domain is necessary.

Incidence of overweight from 50 to 38 percent

More than 50 percent of adults in the Netherlands are currently overweight or obese. The prognosis is that this number will continue to rise in the coming years if nothing changes in the approach to overweight and the investment in prevention. Policymakers, administrators, managers, project leaders and professionals from the social and medical domains who are (or want to be) actively involved in setting up and implementing a network approach can use the basic model as a guideline. With this joint approach, an important contribution can be made to the goal of the National Prevention Agreement for the number to reduce overweight people to 38 percent by 2040.

Revision obesity guideline

The network approach is a follow-up to the guideline Overweight and obesity in children which will be developed in 2022. The guideline on overweight and obesity in adults is still being worked on.
