The Netherlands – Being busy with your phone as a driver, when your attention should actually be fully on the road. That is not possible. Last year, 179,295 road users received a ticket for holding a mobile phone. “A significant increase compared to 2021. With this behavior you not only endanger yourself, but also other people’s lives,” warns Paul Broer, traffic portfolio holder at the police.

‘Whether you’re driving a car or a bicycle with a phone in your hand; that does not matter. It is forbidden. The device distracts you. You may swing. The consequences can be terrible. Distraction is a regular cause of traffic accidents. That is why the police are calling on you to always drive MONO: do not pick up the phone while driving. Regardless of what for,’ says Broer.

MONO

The increase in the number of fines (almost 40,000 more than in 2021) is largely due to the so-called MONOcam. Broer: ‘It has been working since July 1, 2021. This camera can automatically fine drivers from an overpass for not making hands-free calls. We also check in other ways, such as the use of inconspicuous coaches. Then you sit a bit higher and it is easier to look into cars, but also, for example, the cabins of trucks. If someone is caught, an officer pulls that driver over. Not only for the fine, but also to address the person about the behavior. With the intention that people become (more) aware of their driving behaviour.’

Rise across the board

There has been an increase in the number of fines issued to drivers in all categories. Broer: ‘And these are just the police figures. The actual number of violations will be higher, because Boas can also be fined for this fact.’ Broer concludes: ‘We will continue to monitor traffic for this. So be wise: drive MONO. That not only saves you a fine, it’s also safer for you and other road users.’
