Segway-Ninebot has a stand at MWC. We know Segway from the electric platforms of the same name with wheels to move you along, but the company has many more electric vehicles. A large collection of electric scooters, a scooter, but also a very cool motorcycle: Segway APEX H2.
Hydrogen engine
It is a special engine, because contrary to the current trend (as spotted at the Motorbeurs last week), this is not an electric model, but a hydrogen engine. The downside is that you do have a real problem if you run out of fuel, but Segway says it wants to make the range anxiety of electric motorcyclists disappear. There are no less than 6 storage bins for hydrogen. You no longer have to charge your motorcycle every day, Segway says.
It still remains the case that when you have used up all six bins, you will really have to call a special company: that also applies to hydrogen cars: the ANWB Wegenwacht does not have that with them as standard. Anyway: apparently it takes a while before you have all those six components empty. Moreover, you can go 250 kilometers with it and that is quite a lot, especially for an engine on which everything is a bit smaller.
Segway APEX H2
Segway APEX H2 is also fast at the traffic light: it goes from 0 to 100 kilometers per hour in less than 4 seconds. The maximum speed of this sporty two-wheeler is 150 kilometers per hour, with a maximum power of 60 kW. The most special is probably the price tag. This concept engine would indeed go into production later this year and become available for 10,000 euros each.
It all sounds great, but there’s still one problem: we haven’t seen it drive yet. Like Xiaomi’s robot, will this be a concept that looks nice, or can it actually do something? Now the mini-circuit that Segway had built was really for electric scooters, given its size, but we would like to see Segway APEX H2 in action.
Hydrogen tanks in the Netherlands
But if that all works out and you buy one: where do you refuel? Fortunately, there are now many more hydrogen filling stations in the Netherlands than the three we started with a few years ago. There are currently 17 hydrogen filling stations in our country and another 8 will be added this year anyway. You don’t tank hydrogen per litre, but per kilo. The kilo costs 10 euros and a hydrogen car takes about 6 kilos.
Segway is not the first company with a hydrogen engine: Kawasaki also has one in the works, although it is not expected until 2024 (see video above).
