‘More time needed for agricultural agreement, but good hope’

‘An agreement has not yet been reached and that is disappointing’, says Roy Meijer, chairman of the Dutch Agricultural Youth Contact (NAJK). “But I wouldn’t invest time in these conversations if I didn’t believe we could work it out.”

Like Minister of Agriculture Piet Adema on Tuesday, Meijer contradicts that the talks have collapsed. “The talks just keep going,” he says. ‘An agreement has not yet been reached and that is disappointing. But we just need more time to come to an agreement. We have had solid and good conversations over the past two days.’

‘I’m hopeful. Otherwise I wouldn’t invest time in all these conversations’

For Meijer and the NAJK, it is important that an agricultural agreement pays sufficient attention to company takeovers, in which young people take over a farm from their parents. ‘There are all kinds of tax exemptions and it is important to us that these exemptions remain or even be expanded.’

It is not easy to have money left over for sustainability after such a capital-intensive acquisition, says Meijer.

It is not easy to have money left over for sustainability after such a capital-intensive acquisition, he says. ‘If you take over your parents’ business, you often have to arrange a pension and a home for them. These are extra costs without an increase in turnover. That means that the pot to invest in sustainability is getting smaller.’

Nevertheless, Meijer thinks that he, together with the other parties, can reach an agreement. ‘I’m hopeful. Otherwise I wouldn’t invest time in all these conversations.’
