Customs intercepted a large shipment of cocaine in the port of Vlissingen on Tuesday evening. During that interception, 3,279 blocks of cocaine were seized.

The cocaine was found in a shipment of bananas from Ecuador. The bananas were intended for a company in the Netherlands that, according to the Public Prosecution Service, probably has nothing to do with the drugs.

Typically, a block of cocaine weighs just over one kilo. This means that approximately 3,280 kilos of cocaine were found. That is the largest batch of cocaine found so far this year in Zeeland.

Due to the discovery, there was increased surveillance in the port area during the night from Tuesday to Wednesday by units of Customs, the Seaport Police and the Royal Military Police.

The drugs were collected and destroyed on Tuesday evening by Customs’ Special Assistance Team. The Seaport Police and the Public Prosecution Service are further investigating the case.

The public prosecutor’s office believes that the street value of the cocaine is approximately 246 million euros.
