Former team boss Giancarlo Minardi has words of praise for Max Verstappen and Fernando Alonso. Both drivers made mincemeat of their teammates during the Grand Prix weekend in Monaco. The Italian regrets that Aston Martin made the wrong choice at Alonso’s pit stop, because according to him a fight with Verstappen would have been possible.
Verstappen had to squeeze everything out of the RB19 on Saturday to take pole for the Monaco Grand Prix. The last sector of the Dutchman was impressive and he even touched the wall a few times. Sergio Pérez, on the other hand, made a costly mistake in Q1, which saw him finish last. “Max showed his class in Monaco, while Pérez made a rookie mistake,” says Minardi in his column on Motorinolimits.com. “Especially in qualifying he drove an extraordinary lap that took pole from Alonso. The Spaniard in turn made mincemeat of teammate Lance Stroll.’
Minardi is fed up with the wrong choice of Aston Martin
Minardi once again saw the true champions rise in the principality. He did not find the race very exciting, but the rain still caused some excitement in the second part of the race. Fortunately, the rain came to save us from a parade. That ultimately caused a bit of tension.’
The Italian already saw his former pupil Alonso finish on the podium for the fifth time in six races. The two-time world champion even achieved his best result of 2023 in Monaco with second place. Minardi also thinks a great performance, but he is still a bit disappointed with Aston Martin. Too bad the team put the medium tires on him in the rain. The result probably wouldn’t have been any different, but we could have had a fight with Verstappen.”
