Mercedes’ new approach immediately helps: ‘Improvements greater than ever before’

Mercedes is working hard to make the disappointing W14 more competitive and it looks like the team is becoming more and more aligned. Earlier there was still a lot of criticism from the Mercedes team, especially from the drivers Lewis Hamilton and George Russell, but also from team boss Toto Wolff. Changes to the concept are finally being worked on and the improvements seem to be working immediately, Racefans.net reports.

Mercedes was not satisfied with the car presented at the start of the 2023 racing season. The W14 could not keep up with the Red Bull Racing drivers and turned out to have several defects. Team boss Wolff even spoke of an overall change to the car’s concept in an effort to make the car more competitive. It seems that this has now been done.

Wolff: ‘The aim is to get closer to Red Bull’

According to Wolff, the team is now fully engaged in ‘adjusting certain aspects of the W14’. Yet Mercedes did not have a completely disappointing weekend in Saudi Arabia. Russell came in in fourth place and was very close to Sergio PĂ©rez during the qualifying session, who was eventually allowed to start from pole position. Nevertheless, Wolff insists that the concept must be adjusted.

“The fact that we are close doesn’t make it good,” Wolff remarks regarding the race weekend in Jeddah. “For now, the Red Bull drivers are still out of reach and the gap has not narrowed, while that is our ultimate goal.” The Austrian is happy that the Mercedes is doing well during practice and qualifying, but in the end it is all about the result of the race. ‘That is why we have to press ahead with these improvements.’

Mercedes makes big steps ‘but there is no chance of world title’

According to the Mercedes team boss, they are already well on their way with that. “Big steps are being made compared to the relative performance of today,” the Austrian notes. “The growth made by our development department and aerodynamics department is greater than it has been in ages.” Wolff speaks of potential being finally unlocked. ‘No step has been taken back, on the contrary, we have even taken two steps forward.’

However, Wolff remains cautious about making statements about the course of the season. “We have to remain realistic and then we can’t actually talk about a chance at the world title, then you would be crazy,” concludes the Mercedes team boss. “But on the other hand it’s still motorcycle racing and you should never give up.” Wolff expects exciting races to come. “If you look at how much we have improved in the last ten days, I think there will come a day this year where we also compete for the win.”
