Memphis praises ‘special player’: ‘And a fantastic person’

Memphis Depay is disappointed by the absence of Frenkie de Jong from the Dutch national team. Due to an injury sustained in El Clásico, the FC Barcelona midfielder has to miss the international break.

In conversation with the NOS, Memphis indicates that the Dutch are of course looking back at the World Cup. But: “You’re mainly talking about being happy to be here again. Unfortunately without Frenkie,” he says. “Annoying, because that is one of your most important players, especially how this national coach wants to play. But I don’t think it is a serious injury.”

Memphis emphasizes that he should mainly focus on his own game. The attacker has revived under Diego Simeone at Atlético Madrid. “Simeone gave me a lot of energy from the first moment we were together. He wanted to see the Memphis of last year Lyon again. Who carries the team as captain, but is also involved in goals. He said: I’m going to bring that Memphis back, I want to see that.”

This Friday, Memphis will take on France with the Orange squad. In Stade de France he will meet Antoine Griezmann, his teammate at Atlético. “I know Grizi. Believe me, he is a very special player that France needs. And a fantastic person.”
