Medical specialists are the main source of inappropriate behavior that interns have to deal with. This is the conclusion of a survey by the Medical Student. Co’s mention residents and anioses as the party that is most often guilty of such behaviour.

The medical student conducted a member survey, which included questions about inappropriate behaviour. Undesirable behavior was defined as verbal and physical aggression, bullying, sexual harassment, discrimination and threats. Of the more than 2,300 medical students who responded to the survey, more than half were interns. Almost 17 percent of those co’s, ie more than 200 students, had themselves been directly confronted with undesirable behavior in the previous twelve months.

Healthcare professional as source

Respondents were able to report multiple sources of this undesirable behavior in the survey. Nearly 80 percent of the incidents involved the behavior of other healthcare professionals, while the remainder involved patients and their relatives. Medical specialists (over 37%) were the most frequently mentioned healthcare professionals, followed by residents/residents (over 17%), supervisors (almost 13%), other healthcare professionals (almost 9%) and fellow students (4%).

The unwanted behavior that occurred most often is verbal aggression (more than 30%). Subsequently, sexual harassment (almost 19%), discrimination (almost 18%), bullying (over 16%), threats/intimidation (almost 13%) and physical violence (almost 4%) were mentioned in succession. Most respondents had to deal with inappropriate behavior once. The majority of the incidents went unreported, particularly in incidents involving medical specialists, residents and patients.

No decrease

According to DeMedicinestudent, the results are comparable to a previous study into undesirable behaviour, so this behavior is certainly not decreasing yet. Discussing the fact that it occurs can help to reduce it, according to the student organization. The Medical Student also advocates a low-threshold reporting system, taking reports seriously and imposing appropriate consequences.
