Marlayne Sahupala on quitting alcohol: ‘I was fooling myself’

Quitting or reducing alcohol is usually something people decide to do in December, as a good resolution for the new year. However, former SBS presenter Koos van Plateringen preaches that it is always a good time to give up a drink. He regularly speaks to famous Dutch people about it in his podcast.

For example, Marlayne Sahupala, his former SBS colleague: “I was disappointed that I had that glass again at five in the afternoon. It depends a bit on the definition of ‘an alcohol problem’: for whom was it a problem? Ultimately it was a problem for myself. I could easily not drink for a month. Dry January was no problem, but fortunately it became February 1 again. I was just kidding myself. Every day I decided to leave the glass alone, but at the end of the day I forgot. That was my problem. So now, looking back, I think, yes, I had an alcohol problem. I was ready to quit. I never said I’ll never drink again, but I said I’ll stop. I stopped because of hypnotherapy and I now help people with that.”
