Man who threatened to set himself and his house on fire arrested

Schiedam – From half past five on Wednesday evening there was a lot of commotion in the Huysmansstraat in Schiedam. A 55-year-old man, who was in a home, threatened to harm himself. He indicated, among other things, that he would set himself and the house on fire. He also committed various acts of vandalism in the house. The man was overpowered with the help of a police dog. The man has been taken to hospital.

The emergency number was called at half past six because the man had barricaded himself in his home on Huysmanstraat and was threatening to harm himself. He also threatened to burn down the house and committed all kinds of vandalism in the house. Because the 55-year-old resident of the house posed a danger to himself and the surrounding area, there was a large police presence and several fire brigade units were also present as a precaution. The police deployed a police negotiator and the DSI Rapid Response Team also provided support. Several attempts were made to contact the man and bring the situation under control.

At a quarter to eight, at least two cars caught fire when he threw down a jerry can containing flammable liquid. Shortly afterwards, the DSI started an action. First, bean bags were shot at the windows to break them. If gas had been present in the home, it could have evaporated through the open windows. The DSI then entered the house with a police dog. The man was overpowered. He was bitten by the police dog. The man was brought under control outside and taken by ambulance to the hospital.

The police dog suffered cuts on its paws. Presumably as a result of walking through shards of glass. He was treated at the vet for his injuries.
