A 68-year-old man from Belgium was killed in an accident on the A58. The man stopped in the emergency lane with his car. As he got out, he was hit by a truck. The truck driver, a 57-year-old man from Hungary, has been arrested, the police said.

The accident happened around 1:30 p.m. near Moergestel. According to the police, the victim was standing next to his car with a trailer when the accident happened. He had parked his car along the highway. The driver of the truck may have overlooked him, Omroep Brabant writes.

After the man was hit, the truck collided with the car, hit the guardrail and came to a stop on the shoulder. The driver of the truck and a woman who was still in the car were unharmed.

A58 towards Eindhoven closed all day

Due to police investigations and cleaning and repair work, the A58 between Moergestel and Oirschot in the direction of Eindhoven remained closed for the rest of the day. One lane reopened around 10 p.m.

The truck had yet to be recovered. The accident also damaged the diesel tank of the truck and diesel leaked into the water next to the verge. This all had to be cleared and cleaned. Rijkswaterstaat hopes to have completed all work around midnight.
