Zevenaar – The police, together with various partners, checked the train route between Westervoort and Doetinchem on Friday. In addition to agents, special investigating officers from Breng and Arriva were involved. The Royal Netherlands Marechaussee also joined.

At the end of the afternoon and the beginning of the evening, a so-called ‘one hundred percent check’ took place at the stations of Zevenaar and Doetinchem. All travelers were checked. Both conspicuous and inconspicuous agents and boas were at work in the trains and on and around the stations.

Increasing security

‘Unfortunately, we see that there is regular nuisance at and around the stations, but also in the trains. Boas are confronted with verbal and sometimes even physical violence. We also see that the stations are hotspot locations for thefts and vandalism, for example,’ says Jan-Willem Schaap, initiator of the action from the police in Zevenaar. ‘With an inspection like this, we want to increase safety for travelers and residents, but we also want to send a signal.’

In total, Breng and Arriva issued 88 tickets for traveling without a valid ticket. Fourteen travelers could not show a valid ID and were fined for it. A travel ban was imposed on a train passenger and a 27-year-old man from Poland was caught because he violated such a travel ban.

Arrest and driving under the influence

The police arrested a 54-year-old fare rider who could not identify himself in any way and ticketed a rail runner who ran off when he saw that the station was being checked. In the vicinity of the station in Wehl, agents found a 36-year-old man from the same place. The driver was driving under the influence and eventually blew 390 ug/l. In the vicinity of Duiven station, officers found a scooter driver who was driving without a driver’s license. Because it was not the first time, the scooter was confiscated.

All in all, the police look back positively on the inspection. We ask people who witness suspicious situations at or around the station to always call 0900-8844. In a red-handed situation, this can even be done via 112.
