Little resistance for Verstappen: 'His dominance is not good for the sport'

Kees van de Grint is disappointed that Max Verstappen is dominant again this season. The analyst sees how the Dutchman dominates the weekends, and even with his setback in Saudi Arabia managed to ride to the podium. He had therefore hoped for a little more resistance for the two-time world champion, because although he is given everything, as an enthusiast it is not good for the sport. He is, however, pleased with Verstappen himself, who has a lot of peace and patience.

Van de Grint doesn’t have to think long when asked by Motorsport.com who the big winner of the season so far is. “It’s monotonous, of course, I didn’t expect anything else, but Max Verstappen is the big winner. His dominance is actually not good for the sport, but you can’t blame him, you have to blame the rest,” said the analyst, who said last year that he hoped for more resistance for Verstappen. ‘Well, they’re still there. And unfortunately they have also come true.’

Although the Dutchman has the goodwill factor with Van de Grint, as a fan of the sport he finds it disastrous that the two-time world champion has so little resistance. “I wish Verstappen to win all races, but I am also a fan of the sport and would prefer to see some battle, not that we already know halfway through the season that he is world champion. It’s not about what I give him. But we also just want to see motorsport. I had hoped otherwise, but as it looks now… He seems to have gotten better too, helped by the good car he has. What I said still stands: he has no resistance.’

“Verstappen so relaxed and going very fast”

The attitude of the Red Bull Racing driver is also very different from previous years, there is much more peace at Verstappen. “He’s so relaxed and goes really fast. The peace that comes from it, which makes him think, when things are not going well for a while: ‘I’ll get there’. His catch-up race was also something. Normally he might be a bit more frantic, now he just thought: ‘I’ll get there, we still have so many laps to go so we can do it.’ Of course we also knew that with this car, especially with the DRS system, he can overtake very easily’, the analyst agrees with the driver’s train of thought.
