LEGO has an open-world racing game in the works and it’s almost ready for release. It is about LEGO 2K Drive, which takes a very different approach than we are used to from LEGO. Normally they are often adventure games in co-op, but now it turns into racing. The game is also not made by TT Games, which normally makes the games of the well-known toy brand, which makes it even more interesting to keep an eye on this racing game.
LEGO 2K Drive
The studio behind LEGO 2K Drive is Visual Concepts, known from WWE and NBA: it knows what to do with licensed games. In addition, it also seems to understand a little better what LEGO is all about. Nothing against TT Games, who make great games, but LEGO people want to build, so Visual Concepts puts over 1,000 LEGO pieces into the game to make sure you can build your own car to race in. At least, you can of course also make something completely different, but the base is probably wheels.
If you don’t feel like building your own car at all, you can also opt for all kinds of well-known cars from the LEGO City sets, LEGO Creator sets and Speed ​​Champions. And, what’s really cool, the gigantic McLaren F1 car is also there. Would that new Defender also be there? It will probably be rude to drive, but is of course ideal for crashing into other cars. Moreover, unlike ‘odd man out’ LEGO City Undercover, it is a game to play with two in split screen or multiplayer, if you prefer. But making accidents solo is of course also allowed.
No Mario Kart
The nice thing is that it is not some kind of linear Mario Kart experience, but that an open-world design has been chosen. Some kart action is expected, such as power-ups that you pick up along the way, but not an x ​​number of tournaments and nothing else. The game takes place in a world called Bricklandia and contains multiple themes and regions, so you can always plunge into a completely different setting. You can also encounter mini-games along the way to make the racing experience even more fun.
By the way, we haven’t heard anything in a while about that other special LEGO experience in the works, namely the LEGO metaverse that Epic seems to have in the works. We’ve been hearing less about metaverses lately anyway, so the question is whether that project will get off the ground anyway. On the other hand, with the popularity of Roblox and Minecraft, LEGO can hardly be left behind, can it? Well, first dip a toe in the water with this open world racing experience.
LEGO 2K Drive releases May 19 on Switch, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and PlayStation 4.
