Lawyer Inez Weski will be detained for two weeks longer. This is reported by the National Prosecutor’s Office of the Public Prosecution Service. The restrictions imposed on it also remain in force.
Ridouan Taghi’s lawyer was arrested on Friday on suspicion of participation in a criminal organization involved in international drug trafficking and money laundering. She is also suspected of breaching secrets. She would have passed on messages from and to Taghi and thus abused her position as a lawyer.
Weski’s lawyers, Rob Baumgardt and Fébe Schoolderman, let it be known that Weski has resigned Taghi’s defense. They say they will not comment further on the matter. According to the Public Prosecution Service, the criminal lawyer has restrictions, which means that she is only allowed to have contact with her lawyers. Before the weekend, her office in Rotterdam and home were searched.
Session Marengo postponed
It was already announced yesterday that tomorrow’s hearing in the Marengo process has been postponed. Fellow lawyers had asked for this after Weski’s arrest. It is rare in the Netherlands for a lawyer to be arrested.
Life imprisonment has been demanded in the Marengo process against, among others, the main suspect Taghi. Prosecutors say he was the initiator of several murders and attempted murders. It is not clear who will lead Taghi’s defense. The key witness in Marengo, Nabil B., also ended up without a lawyer.
