Last suspect of violence station Bijlmer arrested

The police in Amsterdam have arrested a last suspect in the investigation into the violence at Bijlmer station in early May. Most of the other suspects already reported themselves after recognizable images of them threatened to be shown.

Suspect

It concerns a 19-year-old man from Zaandam. It is the twelfth and last suspect arrested in this case. This is reported by the police on Tuesday.

On the evening of May 5, a man was severely assaulted and pushed onto the track at Bijlmer Arena station in Amsterdam-Zuidoost. He was kicked and beaten by a group of youths, including in the head, when he was already on the ground.

The newspaper Het Parool later reported that one of the boys involved was kissed on the mouth by the man unsolicited, and that the violence would have been a reaction to this. The man has not been found, despite calls from the police to him.

Recognizable

The suspects were asked to report themselves in order to prevent them from being shown recognizable in images of the event. After this call, ten suspects reported to the police in the two weeks following the violent incident. “The other two suspects were identified in other ways and then also arrested,” the police said in a message.

Fixed

In addition to the man arrested today, another 15-year-old suspect is in custody. The 19-year-old suspect will be brought before the examining magistrate on Thursday. Of the twelve suspects, three are no longer suspected of having had an active part in the attempted manslaughter. The other nine – all boys between the ages of 12 and 16 and one man aged 19 – remain suspects in the investigation for the time being.
