AMSTERDAM – During a control operation by the Subversion Brigade, a large quantity of drugs with an estimated street value of more than 70,000 euros was found on Thursday, April 11. The campaign was aimed at a storage box company in Amsterdam South.

During the so-called Out-of-the-Box inspection, a municipal supervisor, pursuant to the General Administrative Law Act, brings along a private sniffer dog to get an indication of whether, for example, hazardous substances are stored in the building. This is because municipalities regularly find that storage locations are used differently than intended and landlords do not always know what exactly is going on in the boxes. In serious cases, this can lead to dangerous situations: not only for the user or landlord of the location, but also for local residents. This includes fire hazard, nuisance due to (drug) use and damage to the health of local residents and the users or owners of adjacent buildings.

Find
At the direction of the sniffer dog, more than 20 kilos of hemp and 60 grams of meth were found near the boxes. The street value of these drugs is estimated at more than 70,000 euros. Growers’ supplies were found in another box.

Subversion brigade
These findings were made during inspections by the Subversion Brigade: a government collaboration to take visible action quickly and effectively against the consequences of the drug economy in the Amsterdam-Amstelland region. The Subversion Brigade is part of the RIEC (Regional Information and Expertise Center), which focuses on tackling organized crime and undermining. Various government partners, including the police, municipalities, the Environment Agency and the Dutch Labor Inspectorate, work together in the Subversion Brigade and carry out joint inspections in the Amsterdam Amstelland region. They do this on the basis of their own tasks and powers.
