Koeman appoints captain and reserve captain: ‘In principle, yes’

Daley Blind has received a clear message from Ronald Koeman. The Orange national coach has told the Bayern Munich defender that he will not be a permanent fixture in the Dutch national team.

Koeman is first asked at the press conference about the absence of Stefan de Vrij, who is no longer a basic player at Internazionale. “There is a lot of competition in the position where he plays. Then you look more at playing minutes than in other cases,” the national coach explains. Blind, who also does not take much action in a club context, is included in the selection. “I called up Daley Blind because I think he is of the age to be at a European Championship next year.”

“He gets the chance to play his hundredth international match, I think he deserves it,” says Koeman. “But I also told him that he is not the first option at left back.” Nathan Aké is mentioned as the new left back at the Orange. “He also plays there at his club”, Koeman remains cryptic.

Wijnaldum
Georginio Wijnaldum, who was passed by Louis van Gaal and had to miss the World Cup due to an injury, is in Koeman’s final selection. In Koeman’s first term with the Orange, the AS Roma midfielder was reserve captain and he is now again. “In principle, yes,” confirms the national coach. Virgil van Dijk remains first captain.
