Jordan sees a resemblance between Verstappen with Pérez and Schumacher with Irvine

Red Bull Racing has the ideal situation, if it is up to Eddie Jordan. He sees similarities between Max Verstappen’s collaboration with Sergio Pérez, and former Ferrari duo Michael Schumacher and Eddie Irvine, he tells Motorsport.com. They drove together at Ferrari from 1996 to 1999.

In 2023, Sergio Pérez will start his third season with Red Bull Racing, also driving alongside Max Verstappen for the third year in a row. For the past two years he was second driver behind Verstappen, who also took home the world title in both years. At the same time, Pérez has only won a Grand Prix three times. Nevertheless, the added value of the Mexican driver for Red Bull is apparent through his fantastic role as wingman alongside Verstappen.

The arrival of Daniel Ricciardo as third driver has no further influence on the collaboration between Pérez and Verstappen, says former team owner Eddie Jordan. “Pérez is loved within the team and will absolutely not be replaced,” Jordan said. “He is a strong driver, has shown that he can win and also knows where the opportunities lie.”

Tensions within Red Bull are lagging behind in the 2022 season

Last season there appeared to be some tension between the two teammates for the first time. Verstappen was allowed to pass Pérez at the Brazilian Grand Prix in an attempt to gain more positions. This was unsuccessful and the Dutchman then had to switch back to the previous position, but he did not want to do that, presumably due to Pérez’s possibly intentional crash during qualifying at the Monaco GP a few weeks earlier. This eventually cost Pérez expensive points and he finished third in the standings.

Nevertheless, Jordan sees a perfect collaboration between the two Red Bull drivers. He even sees similarities with the situation of Michael Schumacher and Eddie Irvine at Ferrari. “It was an obvious situation for Irvine and he understood it,” Jordan said. ‘I’m almost certain that it’s the same for Checo (Pérez, ed.)’, he continues. Jordan mentions that continuity is a priority at Red Bull, and that it is abundantly clear that the team is satisfied with the situation as it is now. ‘They now have a formula for success, they are not going to change that.’
