Insurer Univé suffered a net loss of 65 million euros in 2022. This is due to disappointing investment results due to increased social uncertainty, according to the insurer’s annual report.

It is quite a turnaround for Univé: the insurer goes from a net profit of 64 million euros to a net loss of 65 million euros. According to CEO Ron Bavelaar, this is primarily due to disappointing investment results due to geopolitical developments. ‘After several positive stock market years, the investment results were unfortunately unfavorable last year.’

Despite the loss, Bavelaar is not dissatisfied with the past year. ‘I conclude that when I look at our operating income. We also gained 53,000 new members, which means a nice increase in premium income for us. We are proud of it.’

Technical result

The technical result remained at 31 million euros compared to the previous year, despite several storms in 2022. ‘As an insurer you naturally have to deal with a certain burden of claims, that’s what you’re an insurer for. Precisely to offer your members the certainty that if certain damage occurs, they will simply receive that money.’
