The controversial departure of Ruud van Nistelrooij surprised Gertjan Verbeek. The former trainer of Feyenoord, sc Heerenveen, Heracles Almelo and FC Twente, among others, said this in #DoneDeal, the transfer podcast of VoetbalPrimeur.
Verbeek saw Van Nistelrooij’s departure coming somewhere, but is surprised by the timing. “I did not expect the bomb to burst in the week of the last league match. I did have doubts whether Ruud would start the new season,” says Verbeek in #DoneDeal.
“It is clear that he and PSV are not aligned in terms of ideas and vision,” he continues. “It is therefore a disadvantage that there is a technical director (Earnest Stewart, ed.), who suddenly comes into play. Van Nistelrooij was persuaded by his predecessor John de Jong, and Marcel Brands. Stewart has his own ideas and preferences. That is not in line with Ruud’s ideas. It is all very annoying.”

Van Nistelrooij no longer felt confident and decided to pack his bags. Verbeek: “He was attacked from two sides (players and assistants, ed.) And was not in line with the management. A number of players were mutinous. Then I can imagine you saying: I will stop immediately Then it makes no sense to continue an extra day.”
Verbeek is an expert by experience. “Yes, I also had to deal with mutinous players at two clubs. Or actually three. Feyenoord, FC Twente and also at my last club Almere City. Players had different ideas about the content of the profession, how to train and how football should be played. If you are not on the same page, it becomes very difficult to keep standing.”
Verbeek thinks that everyone at PSV should look in the mirror. “There is something in the club and the club culture of PSV, which is not right at the moment. If it is not quiet in the club, it will be very difficult to deliver top performances.”
