Nico Hülkenberg is realistic about his future in Formula 1. According to the German, it is therefore important to show his best side for the coming season, although that will be difficult in a Haas car. The American team was mainly found at the back of the F1 field last season.
When Hülkenberg is asked by Sky about his future in Formula 1, the German driver is vague. “That will become clear over time,” is all the Haas driver revealed. Hülkenberg is also still unclear about whether the German driver can be eligible for an F1 seat with a team other than Haas. “It kind of depends on how well I can perform in the first five or six races.”
For the time being, the Haas driver ‘just hopes to get the most out of 2024 and present myself as best as possible. Then everything will fall into place.’ Hülkenberg is also realistic about his chances of ending up at a top team after his contract with Haas expires at the end of 2024. “I am now in the 13th year of my career,” the German recalls that he is no longer the youngest driver on the grid.
The German driver is also realistic about Haas’s chances of performing well in 2024. ‘I know I’m not in a top team, I don’t have a top car, but I just have the task of making the best of it. “I want to try to help Haas move forward and do the best for myself and also recommend myself for other tasks, or perhaps for a further future here (in Formula 1, ed.)”
Hülkenberg understands Hamilton’s choice
Hülkenberg was also asked about Hamilton’s switch to Ferrari, and the German says he understands the seven-time world champion’s choice. ‘I think after such a long time you are just looking for a new challenge. You need new motivation, a change of scenery in a sense. The last few years have also been relatively difficult for him and Mercedes compared to the past.’
