As a renowned artist, Marco Bakker knows all too well that he must cherish his audience. “So autographs, pictures, you always have to do those kinds of things,” he tells us. But the famous opera singer has experienced in the past that he could not satisfy fans. Marco tells us: “In Belgium I have experienced my car being beaten because we left after a performance instead of speaking to everyone and signing autographs. Sometimes you are in a hurry as an artist, then you have to quickly go to the next performance and there is no time for a chat. Then someone was so disappointed that they started hitting my car with an umbrella.”

That was not a pleasant experience for Marco, who was accompanied by his wife Willeke van Ammelrooy on the day in question. Marco still looks back on his heyday with pride: “I was very popular at that time, there was an awful lot of work and it was all over. However, I always had to realize that I was only as good as my last record or TV appearance, because once you went wrong, it had direct consequences. Willeke and I have been able to maintain our popularity, nowadays of course especially among the somewhat older people. Also in Belgium we still can’t go wrong. When I ordered a loaf of bread in a bakery a while ago, the other customers turned around: Marco Bakker! They still recognize me by my voice, haha.”
