Eddy Zoëy’s biggest solo hit is ‘Almost’ from the album ‘Success Boy’. Although it remained stuck at 2 in the Tipparade, it became a well-known song. In Panorama Eddy says: “That did not make any difference on paper, but I certainly earned one and a half hundred thousand euros from it in guilders, because I had the rights myself. It was released by a record company, Dureco, but I no longer had a publishing contract at that time. I was smart enough not to renew it, which is why the song is fully in my name. I didn’t get any airplay with Almost, but the joke was: you had the channel V8 at the time and they had an hour of airtime on television without programming. So what did they do during that hour? Broadcast clips. And in that hour I spent almost every day for a month with Almost. And it appeared on compilations with Dutch songs. That was making money like gold. I’ve had several lucky moments with music that made me think: wow, I didn’t see that coming. McDonald’s put gifts in the Happy Meals, which once was a very small boombox. Then you pressed play and he played a song by Kim-Lian van der Meij, which I had written. I saw 15,000 euros appear in my account for that. In this way, several of my songs ended up in people’s living rooms.”
