“Hamstra takes a decision and will indeed leave Ajax for four reasons”

Gerry Hamstra will leave Ajax on his own initiative, De Telegraaf reports. The technical manager of the team from Amsterdam takes a large part of the responsibility for the failed collaboration with Alfred Schreuder and the disappointing transfer summer, while the arrival of Julian Ward is also related to his exit.

On Monday, club watcher Mike Verweij already announced that Hamstra would probably leave Amsterdam. Now De Telegraaf comes with the confirmation: Hamstra is indeed leaving. He is negotiating with the club about canceling his contract, which will run until mid-2024. It is now also clear that Hamstra is leaving the Johan Cruijff Arena on his own initiative.

De Telegraaf cites four different reasons for the director’s decision. Hamstra holds himself largely responsible for the failed collaboration with Schreuder and the poor summer transfer window. The imminent arrival of Ward has also led to Hamstra’s decision, just like the fact that Klaas-Jan Huntelaar has surpassed him internally. Ajax’s club management has full confidence in the former striker.

Hamstra was brought to Ajax as Overmars’ right-hand man. The former director of sc Heerenveen was told that he could permanently succeed Overmars in the long term. That happened faster than expected, but Hamstra disappointed in the past year.
