Hackers steal customer data at Ferrari

If, as a cybercriminal, you are looking for a database with a lot of customer data that you can use for large-scale phishing attacks, then Ferrari’s systems are probably the wrong place for you. The Italian manufacturer of super-expensive sports cars certainly does not have a customer base the size of, say, Volkswagen or Hyundai. However, if you are looking for data from wealthy, financially well-endowed individuals, then Ferrari’s database of customer data is of course a suitable target.

Ransomware hack at Ferrari

Whether this was indeed the reason why cybercriminals recently targeted Ferrari is speculative. The fact is that the Italian supercar maker has fallen victim to a ransomware hack. In addition, 7GB of data was captured by a group calling itself RansomEXX. They demanded that Ferrari pay a ransom to get the data back. If Ferrari did not, the customer data would be made public.

Ferrari itself initially denied the hack, which already took place in October 2022. The denial was only publicly expressed by the manufacturer. Behind the scenes, customers were informed about this via e-mail. This week, Ferrari customers received another e-mail in which Ferrari explains what exactly happened, how they acted and what the possible consequences of the hack are.

No financial information was stolen

According to the manufacturer, they have adhered to their policy of never giving in to the demands of (ransomware) criminals. Immediately after discovering the hack, Ferrari has already informed its customers about the possible theft of (personal) customer data.

To date, no evidence has been found that the hack led to damage or other incidents. According to the manufacturer, the stolen data did not contain any financial data, but only names, addresses and telephone numbers of customers.

Let’s hope that the captured name and address data of generally well-to-do people will not lead to a wave of burglaries at Ferrari drivers.
