Group conversations on WhatsApp are becoming more manageable

WhatsApp has been focusing on group conversations lately. For example, it introduced Communities and significantly increased the group size. Now two new things are added, namely new options for the administrators of groups in WhatsApp, but also for users.

Communities and group management

In a blog WhatsApp indicates that after the launch of the Communities, it wanted to focus on managing groups. Groups on WhatsApp are sometimes a blessing, sometimes a curse. Especially if you have a group that is very active and very large, it can all become too much. Today it introduces two new options: the first is to make it easier for admins to control who can join a group. The second has to do with the individual and how to tell if someone has certain matching groups with you.

Is your best friend your colleague, but also part of your group of friends? Chances are you are in countless WhatsApp groups together. But which? You could see that before by looking at someone’s profile, but now it’s made easier. For example, if you don’t remember the name of that one group, but your friend is also in it, you can simply search for his name in the search bar and you will automatically see which groups you are in together.

In addition, administrators are again in charge. Group admins gain more control over a group’s privacy by determining who can join the group. For example, if an admin shares a group invite link or makes a group available to a Community, the admin can still control who can and who can’t join a group. This way there is no proliferation of people within groups and it remains friendly.

The longer we use WhatsApp together, the more groups will be added. Fortunately, WhatsApp has already made it a little less awkward to leave a group: you can now do so without everyone getting a notification that you have left. That makes it a bit more accessible to leave and delete a group in which nothing is ever said (or too much that you are not interested in). After all, you cannot delete a group conversation if you are still part of it.

WhatsApp will make the new features available worldwide in the coming weeks.
