‘Frontal attack’ from AZ: Alkmaarders demand investigation into KNVB top

AZ opens a frontal attack on the top of the KNVB, De Telegraaf reports Thursday evening. Chairman Jan Albers of the Supervisory Board in particular has to suffer. His behavior around the talks about an NL League went wrong in Alkmaar.

AZ wants the KNVB to conduct an independent investigation into the functioning of its policymakers, the number three of the Eredivisie has announced in a letter to the football association. If the request is rejected, AZ does not even rule out going to court.

AZ director Robert Eenhoorn is very disturbed by Albers’ behaviour. The former PSV commissioner entered into talks with his colleagues at Ajax, Feyenoord and PSV to frustrate the introduction of an NL League, De Telegraaf reports. His goal was to protect the KNVB. His attitude is striking, because in his time with the people of Eindhoven he was still in favor of the NL League, an initiative of the professional clubs to take matters into their own hands.

According to the newspaper, AZ now accuses Albers of ‘backroom politics’. He would also have gone beyond his book. In KNVB meetings, the chairman of the supervisory board promised his full cooperation with regard to the arrival of an NL League, but behind the back of director of professional football Marianne van Leeuwen, he would mainly serve the interests of a limited number of clubs. De Telegraaf is referring to Feyenoord, Ajax and PSV.

These are not the only accusations from Alkmaar. AZ is also outraged because Van Leeuwen and federation chairman Just Spee ignore letters with questions and requests. The settlement in the corona period is also still ‘an open wound’, can be read in the letter. In the 2019/2020 season, Ajax ran off with the Champions League ticket after the competition was stopped. AZ, however, was tied in points. Compensation never came.

AZ believes that there is a pattern in Zeist, with a clear club preference. The KNVB confirms that it has received the angry letter. “We have already indicated to AZ that we would like to discuss the contents of the letter, because the stated facts are incorrect. We have also discussed this with them in previous signals from AZ,” a spokesperson said.
