funding for overweight children

For overweight and obese children, the chain approach of care and support will be structurally funded from 2024 by several care providers. The Dutch Healthcare Authority (NZa) has set performance and maximum rates for this for the central care provider and for the combined lifestyle intervention (GLI) for children.

Central care provider

The funding came about after experiments in Amsterdam, Arnhem and Maastricht. In Amsterdam, the GGD Amsterdam and health insurer Zilveren Kruis experimented with the use of a central care provider. A central care provider coordinates and ensures coordination between care in the medical domain and assistance in the social domain. The Maastricht University Medical Center and health insurers CZ and VGZ worked with a central care provider and GLI for children. Under supervision, children worked on achieving and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. The Rijnstate hospital and Menzis also experimented with this chain approach in Arnhem.

Appointments IZA and GALA

The Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport (VWS), the Association of Dutch Municipalities and Dutch health insurers have made agreements in theIntegral Care Agreement(IZA) andHealthy and Active Life Agreement(GALA) on the national implementation of the chain approach for overweight and obesity in children. The new funding of the NZa is an important precondition for this. The parties mentioned above are also working on the other preconditions, such as effective care programmes, sufficient and qualified central care providers and lifestyle coaches.
