Former Red Bull engineer sees few opportunities for Pérez against Verstappen

Blake Hinsey, former performance engineer of Max Verstappen, thinks it is almost impossible for Sergio Pérez to keep the Dutchman from his third world title. According to the former Red Bull Racing employee, who now earns his living as a content creator, Verstappen leaves little to chance and Hinsey actually sees only one option for the Mexican. Hinsey also contradicts that the RB19 was built specifically to Verstappen’s wishes.

Through his past with Force India and Red Bull, Hinsey has experienced both Verstappen and Pérez up close. In 2023, the battle for the world title seems to be between the two drivers of the Austrian formation, but is it really a battle? According to Hinsey, Verstappen has ‘enormous talent’ and when asked how Pérez can beat Verstappen, the Briton has to think carefully.

“I really don’t know,” he replies in the Track Limits podcast. “Many people say: he should do this or he should do that, but in the end I think that Checo should probably start to feel much more comfortable in a nervous or less stable car. The better you can do that, the faster you can go. An understeering car is rarely a fast car. Max (Verstappen, ed.), on the other hand, is able to drive to the limit in a less stable car without going over it.’

RB19 no longer built to Verstappen’s wishes

It is regularly claimed that the RB19 is built to Verstappen’s driving style, but Hinsey wants nothing to do with that. ‘That’s really nonsense. That’s the dumbest point of view I’ve ever heard. In the end, they mainly want to build a fast car,” the Briton is clear. Incidentally, he does not want to claim that Verstappen never has better parts, but he thinks there is a good reason for that. “Are there times when Max has the better parts? Probably. If maybe because of the limited budget they can only bring one wing or floor to a race, then maybe. But I can’t recall a single moment in the past six years when another front wing was worth three-tenths,” said Hinsey.
