Ford has two cars in the making that will both compete against Chinese brands, but also against Tesla. Tesla is a popular car brand and has put electric driving on the map, although brands such as Kia and Hyundai also contribute significantly. Now Ford also wants to get involved, because it is said to have an SUV and a pickup in the works that are electric. And above all: not that expensive. The starting price is probably around 25,000 euros.
Cheaper EVs from Ford
So it is not just Tesla that poses a threat: Chinese brands such as BYD are also coming onto the market with all kinds of electric cars that are also very cheap. Reason for Ford to also work on a more affordable electric car. It wants to achieve this by switching to a lithium-phosphate battery versus the regular lithium-ion battery. These batteries take longer to charge, but they cost a lot less. So much less that Ford thinks it can quickly make the cars profitable: after just one year. That would be a top achievement for the company, which is currently losing $5.5 billion on electric cars.
So an SUV and a small pickup. Both cars should run on a new platform that Ford is developing for electric vehicles Bloomberg know. About 100 people are now working on this. However, there are also projects involving EVs that have been abandoned. The larger electric vehicles that Ford had planned will come later. There is also a plan for an electric pickup with three rows of seats that will come later.
Electric SUV in 2026
We will have to wait a little longer for the cars themselves: the SUV is expected to appear in 2026, which promises to be an interesting year for cars anyway, because many cars have been announced that should be released that year. Whether the small pickup will also make it to 2026 or 2027 remains to be seen, but Ford may also be considering a third car, so there is work to be done anyway. That third car would be more of a car to use as a taxi.
In the meantime, Tesla is also working on a cheaper car: the Model 2 should also be around the recommended retail price of 25,000. That is also expected around 2026, although it could also be 2027. Nothing else is known about the Ford cars yet, so hopefully we will soon hear more from Ford itself about the specifications of the cars.
