Feyenoord gets priority: ‘Can you play against France, that is world top’

Mats Wieffer states that he took Feyenoord into account during the international match period. The midfielder made his debut against Gibraltar (3-0) in the Dutch national team, but deliberately missed the encounter with France (4-0).

The day after the Classic against Ajax, Wieffer reported to Zeist. “I did suffer from my Achilles tendon. I reported this to the national coach,” he says in Algemeen Dagblad. “In my head I still had: Feyenoord is the most important. Then you can play against France, but that is the world top. If you are not one hundred percent then it will not get along.”

Wieffer says he ‘particularly enjoyed’ his first week with the Orange squad. He is disappointed by the absence of Frenkie de Jong. “A player who also plays in my position, a different type, but you can learn a lot from that. Anyway, he wasn’t there now. An extra motivation to be there again.”

Zerrouki
Last winter, Feyenoord did everything they could to recruit FC Twente midfielder Ramiz Zerrouki. “In the end, it may have been nice for me that Ramiz did not come,” said Wieffer, who has been a basic player in South Rotterdam since the new calendar year. “If he had come, I wouldn’t have minded either, although he might have been in the base because a lot of money would have been paid. You just have to make sure you’re better.”
