Explosion in broad daylight at an apartment house in Amsterdam-Zuidoost (UPDATE)

An explosion at a home in the Kikkenstein apartment building in Amsterdam-Zuidoost caused a lot of damage on Sunday afternoon. A resident was home at the time of the explosion, but was not injured. The house has been declared uninhabitable by the fire brigade.

Fire

The Amsterdam city channel AT5 writes that the explosive went off around 12 noon on the balcony of an apartment on the first floor of the flat. A fire also broke out after the explosion, which was extinguished by the fire brigade.

Asbestos

The house was so damaged that it was declared uninhabitable by the fire brigade. Surrounding apartments were not damaged, but some homes were evacuated as a precaution because asbestos was released during the explosion.

The police are conducting an investigation and search for a suspect. A police helicopter was also deployed, AT5 reports.

Third explosion

It is the third time within 24 hours that an explosion has occurred in the same area. This happened on Saturday afternoon around 3:30 PM at a house on Kormelinkweg in Amsterdam-Zuidoost, approximately 200 meters from the Kikkenstein flat. On Saturday night around 00.30 an explosive went off at a house at the Kruitberghof. That street also borders Kikkenstein. No one has been arrested for this yet.
