VNO-NCW and MKB-Nederland call on the cabinet to relax the nitrogen rules. In this way, the employers’ associations want to prevent the Netherlands from becoming even more ‘locked’.

Chairman Ingrid Thijssen of VNO-NCW says in an interview in De Telegraaf that the Netherlands has partly created the problem itself. ‘The BoerBurgerBeweging and other parties have rightly been calling for some time that we shouldn’t be blinded by years and percentages,’ says Thijssen.

As an example, she mentions the so-called critical deposition value and the use of the model-based nitrogen calculation. According to her, Brussels does not force the Netherlands to cooperate. ‘Now all new projects are assessed in the same way. While we want ecologists to determine whether a certain amount of nitrogen in a certain area leads to a significant deterioration of nature.’

The chairman points out in De Telegraaf that the Netherlands has been ‘locked down for almost four years now’ and that some entrepreneurs cannot continue because there is no room for nitrogen. ‘And it is only getting worse, with the low point being that the entire province of North Brabant said a few weeks ago: We are not going to grant any more permits.’
