EA Sports UFC 5: Takes fighting and visuals to the next level

EA has revealed more about EA Sports UFC 5. The fighting game looks better than ever before: it’s almost scary how lifelike the athletes look. The cover of the game features lightweight champion Alexander Volkanovski and former flyweight champion Valentina Shevchenko. At least, that is on the regular version: middleweight fighter Israel Adesanya is the big man on the deluxe edition of the game.

Frostbite engine

The game is built in the Frostbite engine and should more than ever bridge the gap between the real UFC and this virtual version of it. EA promises, among other things, better training camps and AI: the sparring challenges. There is also a new grading system and artificial intelligence improvements to make the game more challenging. New transitions have been made to the surrender system, so if someone gets you on the ground, the animations are a bit faster, giving it a more streamlined effect and therefore more realistic looking.

That’s what counts in this game anyway: realism. You sometimes have to make an effort to decide whether you are watching a real fight or a game and that also makes it more fun for viewers/housemates to watch instead of picking up the controller themselves. And, something that some people will be very happy with in the context of a more realistic fight: the mini-games are taken out to make the fight more realistic with more focus on that, instead of all kinds of things around it.

If your fighter has done too much damage to the ‘enemy’, the doctor may shut things down. That is of course quite advantageous for you at that moment, but if it is the other way around, then it is of course a shame. It is now more possible than ever to cause very specific damage: EA Sports even calls it strategic. So you can smartly hurt someone, so to speak. And, another advantage: the blood also seems to flow even more realistically. So enjoy.

The ground combat, but also the standing combat, looks a lot better. EA Sports has opted for a more cinematographic angle here and we still have to experience what that feels like in real life. It sounds cool, as long as it doesn’t distract too much from the fight itself. And, to continue with that realism: the facial changes that occur in real fighters when they have taken a big punch, are also more present than ever in UFC 5. There are 64,000 (!) different options for damage. display. Bruises, scratches, cuts: it is all possible in no fewer than 8 places on the head. And, not unimportantly, the gameplay is also affected by this: after all, you fight slightly differently when your left eye is closed.

EA Sports UFC 5 releases on October 27. The game will be released on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S.
