Many people grew up with a Disney movie. For some it will be The Little Mermaid, for others it will be Snow White. And for someone else, perhaps The Little Mermaid from 2023, which has been available on the Disney+ streaming service since this week. Where Disney used to release its ‘classics’ one by one on Blu-ray and DVD, it now comes with a Blu-ray collection that is such a wanna-have that you would almost sell an organ for it, if it weren’t quite unethical.
Disney 100 years
It is probably necessary if you want to buy this collection with the 100 discs: it is not cheap. It costs $1,500 and we won’t be surprised if it also costs $1,500. That in itself is acceptable: it means that you pay 15 euros per bluray. Now I hear you thinking: that’s not that cheap. That’s right: you can now buy Beauty and the Beast or Junglebook new on disc for a tenner. But: there are also many films that have never had that Blu-ray treatment, and are now receiving it in this special collector’s edition.
This must-have is called the Disney Legacy Animated Film Collection and you will only find animated films from Disney in it. So no movie like Hocus Pocus: just animated classics from the Mouse House itself. Ask friends and colleagues to name a Disney animated film and there’s a good chance it’s in the collection. It is striking that Pixar films are also part of the collection. Although they have many similarities with Disney films (and the company is also Disney), that does not quite fit in with a 100-year Disney collection, as far as we are concerned.
Disney Legacy Animated Film Collection
But hey, it shouldn’t spoil the fun, because Pixar films are just as great. The collection includes films such as Snow White (Disney’s first full-length cartoon, from 1937) and even Elemental, this year’s animated film, is also present. But also Robin Hood, Frankenweenie, The Incredibles and even the cult hit The Black Cauldron: they are all there. The nice thing is that there are also films that you cannot currently watch on Disney+, which makes the collection offer even more value. And Disney has few straight-to-DVD films, so you get the -usually- best films from the beloved brand if you buy this very white-looking collection.
Now we didn’t expect hysterical packaging with all kinds of Disney characters on it, after all, it is clearly a collection for collectors, but that white is of course extremely contagious. It will therefore be quite a challenge to preserve this collection in ‘mint’ condition. On the other hand, that will be difficult anyway, because you still want to ‘browse’ and probably want to jump on certain films. On the other hand, the latter is not necessarily necessary: you also receive a sheet with all the digital codes for the films. The discs can therefore remain smudge and fingerprint free.
Whether this special collection will also come to the Netherlands is unknown, but we have asked Disney about this, so if you have an answer, you can read it here.
