The death toll from the storm in parts of Greece, Bulgaria and Turkey has risen to fifteen. The countries are experiencing heavy rainfall and flooding this week. People are still missing.
Storm Daniel, as Greek meteorologists call the storm, has left a trail of destruction. In several places, streets and houses were flooded and roads and bridges collapsed. Rain is also expected today.
In Greece, the highway between Athens and Thessaloniki, the country’s main highway, is closed due to the storm. Train traffic between the two largest cities is also flat. Police have also closed other roads.
Rain follows wildfires
The storm killed at least four people. The Volos region, north of Athens, has been experiencing extreme rainfall for days. On Tuesday there was the amount that normally falls in a few months. Some 800 people have been evacuated in the past two days. Code red applies to many areas.
The heavy rainfall follows a dry period with large wildfires. Parts of the country were ravaged for weeks by the fires, which destroyed nature reserves and killed at least 21 people.
Surprised by floods
In western Turkey, five campers were killed when they were surprised by flooding. In Istanbul, the storm killed two people. In the country’s largest city, hundreds of homes and businesses have been damaged by the water.
At least four people were killed in Bulgaria. On the Black Sea coast, tourists also suffer a lot from the weather. In the seaside resort of Tsarevo, hotels and campsites are under water. According to the Ministry of Tourism, at least 4,000 people have been affected by the storm.
