Former Formula 1 driver Pedro de la Rosa has a top three current driver list consisting of Max Verstappen, Fernando Alonso, and Lewis Hamilton, as he believes those drivers offered something special and unique every time they stepped into the car. The Spaniard thinks that Charles Leclerc has the potential to make it into the top three, but is currently unable to match those performances.
For now, Leclerc is not in the top three of the best drivers of 2023. The Monegasque had a rough start to the season, but Ferrari seems to be on the upward trend here and there. The car’s performance is somewhat inconsistent, and it seems as if Carlos Sainz can handle that a little better than the 25-year-old. De la Rosa is firm on his top three, which consists of Verstappen, Alonso, and Hamilton. According to the Spaniard, those three drivers do something special and unique every time they get into the car to race. “Charles is a fantastic driver, but time will tell whether he can be among the top three on the grid,” De la Rosa begins in the F1 Nation podcast.
‘We will discover that in the coming years. For me, the three best are Max, Fernando and Lewis, but we have to pay attention to the small details because everyone who is there is great,” says the former Formula 1 driver. De la Rosa emphasizes that consistency is the key to the success of the three world champions, but it is also important to highlight what special they can do on the track. Whether they are fighting for victory, the podium or points, they always offer something special to the crowd and this year they are showing a more consistent and stronger performance than the rest of their rivals and especially their teammates.
De la Rosa always enjoys Alonso: ‘He always offers something spectacular’
Alonso, now the oldest driver on the grid, regularly treats the viewer to a spectacle, according to De la Rosa. “It doesn’t matter whether they are fighting for wins or, in Fernando’s case, trying to get into Q3 or fighting for that last point, as in his time at Alpine, he always offers something spectacular.” Emerson Fittipaldi was particularly impressed by Sainz in Monza, who took a podium for Ferrari after his pole position on Saturday. The Brazilian praised the Madrid driver and his season at Ferrari. In a week’s time the drivers can put on another spectacle, this time on the streets of Singapore.
