Dangerous ride over several highways; police are looking for witnesses

Rotterdam – A 28-year-old Rotterdam resident endangered countless motorists on Sunday afternoon with life-threatening driving behavior. He also endangered motorcycle officers by trying to run over those motorcycle officers. The police are looking for witnesses to this crazy ride.

Around 1 p.m., a motorcycle police officer drove from south to north on the A16 near the Brienenoord bridge. There he saw a black Mercedes driving at a very high speed in the lane that is only for trucks. The officer gave chase. The officer reached a speed of 235 km/h and the car was still moving towards him. At this speed, the Mercedes overtook other cars from both the left and the right. He overtook on the hard shoulder and drove over drift surfaces.

The Mercedes drove via the A16 to the A20 towards Hoek van Holland. Even on the 80 km stretch where it was busy with traffic at that time, he continued to drive well above 200 km/h and overtake other cars left and right. Several cars had to swerve to avoid a collision.

Because there were other units and a police helicopter on the way, the motorcycle officer decided to stop the pursuit for his own safety and that of other traffic. The Mercedes took the Vlaardingen exit and drove onto the Broekpolderweg to turn around. He then drove at high speed towards a motorcycle officer who had to swerve to the side of the road for protection. The driver had previously also tried to drive into another motorcycle officer. The Mercedes then drove onto a cycle path on the Broekpolderweg where two cyclists were riding who also had to swerve to avoid being hit by the Mercedes. The police would like to get in touch with these cyclists for an explanation. Hopefully they will report.

The Mercedes then returned to the A20 via the Broekpolderweg. The crazy ride then went via the A20 over the A13 towards The Hague over the A4, where the car was ‘picked up’ by the police helicopter. At the exit of the N207, the driver of the car took the exit at high speed over the N207 to drive through the built-up area of Roelofarendsveen. There the driver took the A4 in the direction of Amsterdam. The chase then continued at speeds above 200 kilometers per hour on the A4, A5 and A10. The driver drove over the emergency lane several times at high speed.

The vehicle came to a standstill on the A10 because it ran out of fuel. The 28-year-old driver has been arrested for attempted manslaughter and dangerous driving. The car has been seized and the driver’s license has been confiscated. The driver was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
