Contract situation Leclerc does not worry Vasseur: 'Charles is part of the project'

Frédéric Vasseur is not worried about Charles Leclerc’s future with the Ferrari team. It was suggested that the driver had grown tired of the team from Maranello, but Vasseur says Leclerc knows the success story with the Italian team will take time. Nevertheless, the Frenchman can agree that the driver is frustrated with the current situation at Ferrari, but the team boss thinks that is understandable.

A lot has already been written about Leclerc’s future at Ferrari ahead of the Grand Prix weekend. The Monegask would like to seek refuge with Mercedes in the future. That would then be after 2024, since the driver still has a contract with Ferrari. That contract has not yet been renewed. “No, I have already said that we will talk about it during the season,” Vasseur told the Italian branch of Motorsport.com. “We have time to discuss it and I’m not afraid at all.”

Charles is clearly part of the project, he is very involved in the development of the team. The multiple race winner signed a long-term contract after the 2019 season. This confidence should lead to future successes. “Every team is always built around the driver. Looking at the history of Formula 1, all the best success stories have taken time and there have always been key figures around whom the rest of the team took shape; Lewis at Mercedes, Michael at Ferrari and Alonso at Renault.’

Vasseur finds Leclerc’s frustration understandable

Yet the frustration seems to be read on Leclerc’s face after the first three races of the season. Vasseur is happy that his driver is dissatisfied with the start of the season. “Frustration in a sense is understandable, I would be very angry if our drivers were happy with the current situation.” Ferrari itself was frustrated by the situation surrounding Carlos Sainz’s penalty in Australia. “I think it was important to support Carlos, then go to the FIA, discuss and understand their position on what happened,” said Vasseur.
