chunk pilots | Pérez sees title dream shatter and does Red Bull no service with a million-dollar bill

No one is surprised that a front wing, Pirelli tire or other piece of material regularly breaks down in Formula 1. Per race, a few pieces of Formula 1 car disappear in the trash due to spins, crashes and collisions between the drivers. Who takes the most damage? Who is the biggest chunk pilot in the sport? F1Maximum keeps track of the state of affairs with Brokkenpiloten.

The Grand Prix of Monaco resulted in a lot of debris last weekend. Seven of the ten teams delivered at least one driver who couldn’t keep the car out of the dreaded walls. This also made the Grand Prix weekend in the streets of Monte Carlo the most expensive race weekend of this season so far. The Formula 1 teams had to pay a total bill of €3,414,000.

Albon and Pérez similarly into the wall

One of the first unlucky birds of the weekend was Alexander Albon. The Williams driver drove his laps in the first free practice session to provide the team with enough data to set up the car as well as possible. However, his training, like that of the other drivers, was halted. Albon arrived in the first corner, but arrived with too much speed. The Thai driver lost control of his car and hit the rear of his FW44 hard against the wall. A cost of €732,000 is anything but pleasant for a team like Williams in times of budget limits.

On Saturday, in the same corner, and almost identically, it was Sergio Pérez’s turn. The Red Bull Racing driver immediately caused the most expensive bill of the weekend with his crash in Q1. The Austrian racing stable has to tap an amount of € 1,082,000 after also mentally costly hits from Pérez. The Mexican was unable to participate in the qualifying session due to his worst crash and therefore started at the very back. Not ideal on a track like Monaco. A day later things went from bad to worse. The man from Guadalajara broke his wing several times, causing the bill to rise considerably.

Sainz and Hamilton do their own teams a disservice

During the free practice sessions, Albon’s crash did not stop there. Earlier it was Nico Hülkenberg who strangely touched the wall with his left rear tire. A session later it was Carlos Sainz’s turn, who, like teammate Charles Leclerc two years earlier, shot into the wall at the pool area. The Spaniard did not drive the ideal line through the chicane and had to pay for it with a bang. Ferrari in particular will not be happy with the crash of the single race winner, because it costs the Italian team € 670,000.

A day later, it was seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton’s turn in the first session. The Mercedes driver simply took too much speed into turn 5 and was unable to steer his car in time. This shot him straight into the wall and broke his front wing, front suspension and his brakes. Hamilton still tried to drive away, but Peter Bonnington, the Briton’s race engineer, had to indicate that it was safer to switch off the W14’s engine.

Stroll is the only one to drop out after a crash

The Monaco Grand Prix had several minor incidents. Sainz and Pérez broke their front wings on drivers who drove in front of them, but that was it. Until the moment when it started to rain and the chaos started. Several drivers shot off the track, but that happened in relatively tactical places. However, Lance Stroll failed to shoot straight at a run-off lane. The Aston Martin driver took his front wing off in the hairpin and moments later ended his own race by hitting the wall again. That second bang is understandable, since he couldn’t steer because his front wing had ended up under his car.
