Checklist for traveling to the Netherlands

Documents

Valid travel document
You need a valid travel document to enter the Netherlands. This can be a passport (depending on your nationality with a visa) or an ID card (if you are traveling within Europe). Do you have the nationality of a country outside the European Union (EU), European Economic Area (EEA) or Switzerland? Then your passport may not be older than 10 years. And your passport must be valid for at least 3 months after leaving the Schengen area. Children traveling with you need their own valid travel document.

Check if you need a visa
Check whether you need a visa in your situation and, if so, which visa. That depends on your nationality and travel plans.

Permission if you are traveling with a minor child
Are you traveling alone with a minor child? Then you must be able to demonstrate that you have permission from the parent(s). Check with the local authorities of your country of departure what the requirements are for traveling alone with a minor child. This way you avoid delays and you do not run the risk of missing your flight.

Valid (international) driver’s license
Bring a valid driver’s license if you want to rent and/or drive a car or motorcycle in the Netherlands. Check whether your driving license is valid in the Netherlands.

Do’s and don’ts

Personal goods
You can’t just take everything with you in your luggage. Additional rules apply to some goods, such as paintings, furniture and animal products. You will find an overview of the products to which extra rules apply on the Customs website.

Medicines
Do you use medicines? Bring enough supplies. Also in case you unexpectedly want to (or have to) stay a little longer.

You can take most medicines with you to the Netherlands, as long as you can demonstrate that they are for your own use. Please adhere to the rules for taking medicines with you. Medications with a narcotic effect are included in the Opium Act. You may only take this with you to the Netherlands if you have an official statement. Do you need a statement for your medicine to take it with you? Check whether the statement needs to be legalized. Check with the local authorities of your country of departure for the requirements for taking medicines with you.

Drugs
Do not bring drugs to and from the Netherlands. This action is punishable.

To travel to the Netherlands with (fake) weapons and ammunition, you need a permit or exemption. You can read more about traveling with weapons or ammunition on the Customs website.
