Changes to McLaren car for 2024 'are not just about aerodynamics'

McLaren team boss Andrea Stella looks ahead to the upcoming season. The British racing team, like the rest of the teams, has been working on the car for 2024 for some time and of course hopes to close the gap to the top. McLaren has already done an incredible amount of work, because the racing team made a huge leap with the update package that was introduced in Austria. However, McLaren cannot build on this basis by only looking at aerodynamics.

McLaren has managed to take a giant step this season. At times the team was not even competing for points at the start of the season, but McLaren is currently indispensable on the podium. Next year the step towards race victories must be taken and that will also involve adjusting some parts of the car. ‘We have set some goals, but I cannot say in which area and how. What I can say is that it’s not just about aerodynamics,” says Stella at Motorsport.com.

McLaren has a solid foundation for next season, despite still being behind Red Bull Racing. The regulations will remain stable, but that does not mean that the proportions will be the same in 2024. ‘It partly depends on where you are this year with the car for next year, because that is the starting point for almost everyone. Yet it mainly depends on the development path. This started for us in July, which means a lot of work and time has gone into the car for next year.’

Stella: ‘Had to explore different concepts’

It became a long development race for McLaren. The British racing team started with a car that was not competitive. However, after the Austrian Grand Prix, the team was consistently at the front. “The car we launched in March has some elements that have been further developed, but most of it has been completely changed. Especially when it comes to the floor, bodywork, rear wing, and to some extent the front wing. We just had to explore different concepts,” Stella said
