A shipment of gold and other valuables worth about 20 million Canadian dollars (about 13.5 million euros) was stolen at Toronto airport this week. This has been announced by the local police.

The cargo arrived last Monday by cargo plane and was parked in a storage area at the airport. The cargo then disappeared there “illegally”, said local inspector Stephen Duivesteyn during a press conference. Not much later, the disappearance was reported. Police say it is an isolated incident. “This is very rare.”

How the theft took place and where the cargo is now is not known. The police have also not disclosed anything about the airline with which the cargo was transported and where the aircraft came from. However, the police say that “there is no cause for concern” among passengers who use the airport. “We do not see this as a threat to public safety.”
