Bottas advises Pérez against Verstappen: 'Then you get the whole team on board'

Valtteri Bottas has advised Sergio Pérez in his attempt to dethrone Max Verstappen from his throne within Red Bull Racing. According to Lewis Hamilton’s former teammate, which means that Bottas can safely be seen as an expert by experience, the Mexican must get everyone within Red Bull on his side.

That won’t be easy given Verstappen’s status, but according to Bottas you can at least try. “You have to get everyone on your side. I’m sure he’s working on all fronts and ultimately it’s about momentum. When you have a series of good results, you get the whole team with you and that’s a good thing for everything,” says the Finn at The Race.

Bottas: F1 teams have time to pick first driver

Bottas suggests he failed and then there comes a certain point in the season when the teams choose their first driver. ‘It’s more about how different teams work with it. As in: how they decide, when they decide, point difference – you name it. But then they can still give both drivers the same material. I definitely felt like I got the chance every year, but then there was a decision at a certain point.’

In short: after a while, Mercedes chose Hamilton again and again. Pérez must try to prevent that at Red Bull this year in his fight against Verstappen. “It’s still early in the year and he still has a good chance to beat Max,” said Bottas. “I expect that at some point they’ll say who they’re going for, but it’s not that far yet.”
